Blender Ubuntu Install

Problem in Ubuntu Studio 8.10?
I have just installed Ubuntu Studio 8.10 DVD. Everything works fine and I’m very excited about my new OS.
However, I’m experiencing the following two problems:
1. When opening Synfig Studio, just the splash screen appears, closes and nothing else happens.
2. Blender works, but the display breaks up and the menus are just black block.
Does anyone know about these problems and how can it be fixed?

I feel like saying, no I don’t, except…
Blender and your operating system are just taking up too much memory. That is the problem, there. Blender was originally written on UNIX at the time when most animation programs were running on Silicon Graphics machines. That’s still some very impressive hardware. I might consider Ubuntu Studio on this machine, which is pretty impressive, but I have slackware installed on it (with blender and Synfig) and I’m more likely to use it with this or dyne:bolic, a slackware knockoff, because the OS has a smaller footprint than Ubuntu does. The tradeoff of course is Synfig is one of those programs I installed by compiling it onto the system. If you aren’t comfortable around makefiles you probably shouldn’t run Slackware (though dyne:bolic’s developer might disagree and he does know more about computers than me). More memory or a smaller OS is my suggestion for Blender.
Synfig — suddenly it occurs to me, that also happens when you don’t have enough memory, but Synfig is really an awful program anyhow. I’ve been playing with Pencil Animation and I haven’t got it working perfectly by any means — but I’ve gotten a lot farther with it than I have with Synfig either here or in my less responsive vanilla debian install on my other box. I used Macromedia Director on a Mac from 1993 to 2000 and all I can say is that Synfig is a BADLY IMPLEMENTED vector drawing program (as opposed to Inkscape which is well implemented) on a badly implemented animation program.
If you can spend the money you should get blender to work. I promise nothing about synfig.
